NASA STS 51-G Space Shuttle -
30th Anniversary Film


Just occasionally, a job doesn’t feel like work at all. To this avowed space nerd, the chance to write a film for an official NASA commemorative dinner was a joy indeed.

The event marked the 30th anniversary of the STS 51-G Space Shuttle, notable for including the first royal astronaut:  Prince Sultan bin Salman of Saudi Arabia,

But the Prince was no passenger: he had to pass the same physical, mental and scientific aptitude tests as the rest of the crew. The mission generated intense interest across the Arab world, which for the first time was sharing in manned spaceflight.

The Prince commented later: “I took 800 million people up there with me.”
